Quick & Easy Way to Strengthen Your Grounding

We often hear how important it is to stay grounded. But what exactly is grounding? How can we ground ourselves quickly and effectively?

How Electrical Grounding Works

The reason we ground electrical wires is to avoid receiving a serious electric shock from a leaking current and to protect our electronic equipment from becoming damaged by high voltages. High voltages can be caused by lightning, an electrical surge or contact with a higher voltage.

The grounded wires send the extra electricity harmlessly into the earth, circumventing you and your equipment and minimizing damage.

Negatively Charged Objects: When an object obtains more electrons than protons, it becomes negatively charged—it has an excess of electrons. When the object loses those extra electrons to equalize the number of protons and electrons, it once again has a balance of charge.

Good Tip: To avoid static electricity in your dryer, attach a few paper clips or safety pins to your linen. These metal pins, rather than your laundry, will pick up the excess electrons.

To lose those extra electrons, the object has to connect—via a conductive material—to another object that is able to receive those electrons. The first object has now become grounded because it has lost its excess electrons.

An example of grounding in action is when you receive a small electric shock when you take really dry towels or blankets out of the dryer. The excess electrons from the linen transfer to your skin and get dispersed. If you touch metal—a conductive surface—immediately afterwards, you might feel another small shock as the electrons move from your skin to the metal.

Positively Charged Objects: Objects can also become positively charged if they have lost electrons and have an excess of positrons. Positively charged objects must obtain electrons to regain a balanced charge.

Let’s say you have just received a small shock from removing your dry towels from the dryer. Then, you touch your dryer (which is metal) and get another small shock; maybe the surface of your dryer was positively charged and you were kind enough to ground it (balance it) by sharing your excess electrons.

We Also Need To Remain Grounded

Our body and our entire being can also become either negatively or positively charged, physically, emotionally, mentally and/or spiritually. When we are negatively or positively charged, our body and being are not wholly balanced.

When we are firmly grounded: We feel secure, stable, and fully present in our world on all levels. We have a good grasp of what is happening around us and can respond appropriately to stress and life events. We have energy and enjoy our life.

When we are firmly grounded, we are able to accept and to let go of both negative and positive events and emotions.

When we lack grounding: We feel tired and apathetic. We lack purpose and motivation and are fearful. We have difficulty concentrating. People who suffer from depression usually lack strong grounding.

When we lack grounding, we dwell on and hang on to both negative and positive events and emotions.

Most of us find ourselves between these two extremes.

Quick & Easy Way to Strengthen Your Grounding

To strengthen your grounding, you develop a strong connection with the Earth so that you can easily transfer excess energy to it and accept needed energy from it.

Strengthening your connection with the Earth is the second step in my Small Scale, Daily Healing visualization, Connect and Balance in All Space and Time. I offer you the first two steps of this powerful visualization here.

You may want to sit or stand the first few times you do this technique to make it easier to visualize.

Step 1 Connect and Balance in All Space and Time1. Imagine a bright green circle in front of your chest. That circle is your heart chakra or heart energy centre. I’ve made it green because that is the light frequency associated with the heart chakra.

From the middle of that green circle extend a horizontal line (you can make it green or any colour) to the left, all the way to infinity, and say silently: “I have a strong connection to my heart from the beginning of my time…”

From the middle of your heart, extend the line to the right, all the way to infinity: “…to the end of my time.” Focus on that horizontal line for a second.

Step 2 Connect and Balance in All Space and Time2. Imagine a solid, vertical line going from your heart, down your spine and between your legs, and deep into the Earth, all the way to the core of the Earth. Feel the strong grounding you have with the Earth.

From the middle of the Earth, extend a horizontal line to the left, all the way to infinity, and say silently: “I have a strong connection with the Earth from the beginning of my time…”

From the middle of the Earth, extend the line to the right, all the way to infinity: “…to the end of my time.” Focus on that horizontal line for a second.

Repeat once a day for the greatest impact.
